Camera Elements

Assembly of the Camera

The components are assembled and tested in the Lick Optical Shop by Dave Hilyard, George Laopodis, Jeff Lewis, and Andy Sheinis. The mechanical design was done by Alan Schier and Assoc. The nine camera elements are preassembled into four sub-cells. The four sub-cells are lowered one at a time into the camera tube. (Looks easy, doesn't it? ;-)

Testing of the Camera

We autocollimate a reference telescope through a known bandpass filter and measure the resultant spot size with a test microscope and laboratory CCD camera. The images were frame-grabbed and analyzed using IDL. In addition we do a double-pass interferrometric test. Results match those predicted by the lens designer, Harland Epps, very well. We acheived predicted back focal distance to better than 1 part in 1000!
