SHUTTER INSTALLATION:

Revised 11/1/99

M. Radovan

Lick Obs.

  1. Position rotator angle such that the camera mouth is pointing down. In this position the dewar will be at the 12:00 oÆclock position.
  2. Remove limit switches for the Bimba air cylinder with the yellow instruction label. This cylinder should have the limit switches with the long cable assembly.
  3. Loosen curved mounting brackets for the shutter that are mounted to the camera.
  4. Install plastic shim in camera shutter opening to protect the first element of group #4. (group #4 is the triplet closest to the dewar)
  5. Insert shutter from the outside of the instrument making sure not to tilt the shutter in the direction of element # 4. The silver side of the shutter should be facing the dewar (This step requires two techs. One to insert the shutter from the outside and one on the inside to grab the end of the Bimba cylinder as it passes through the shutter.) THIS IS A DANGEROUS OPERATION!! THE FIRST ELEMENT OF GROUP 4 CAN BE DAMAGED IF THE SHUTTER IS INSERTED INCORRECTLY.
  6. Once the shutter body has passed through the other side of the barrel the plastic shim can be removed.
  7. Install and tighten the M6 cap screws from the curved bracket to the shutter before tighening the brackets on the barrel.
  8. Lastly tighten the screws from the curved bracket to the barrel. CAUTION: THE TAPPED HOLES IN THE BARREL DON'T NOT HAVE INSERTS. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN!! HOLES ARE TAPPED THRU. SCREWS OF THE WRONG LENGTH CAN COME TO BARE ON THE OPTICS CELLS. THIS WILL DEFEAT THE A-THERMALIZING MECHINISM. THIS COULD ALSO LEAD TO BROKEN GLASS!!
