DEIMOS TEAM MEETING
Date (06/07/01)

Attendees: Dave Cowley, Carol Harper, Barry Alcott, Dave Hilyard, Heather Mietz, Vern Wallace, Kirk Gilmore, Bob Kibrick, Jack Osborne, Jeff Lewis, Chris Wright, Sandy Faber, Will Deich, Matt Radovan, Drew Phillips

Visitors from Keck: Junichi Meguro and Pat Crivello

1.  Next Meeting:

June 21, 10:30 a.m.

2.  CCDs, Mosaic, Controllers, etc.

CCDs:

Kirk is getting new FC devices allocated. There is only enough aluminum nitrite for one more. Bob needs to update Kirk’s software.

Mosaic:

(Kirk) There is nothing new so far. Will is to work again on molys in the last week of June. Terry enlarged through holes for backplane. Now they need bigger washers (Mc Master Carr). Sandy wants to be involved.

Dewar:

Liquid nitrogen can will be done in a couple of weeks.

Controllers:

Bob is still going around with Motorola about the board. He was able to prove that it’s their board, not others.

Also, we finally got the VME extender board. It’s been confirmed that even if we lose power, we’re still fine.

3.  Software (Bob)

Two rounds of optical tests went well.

Tent mirror software is running the whole time now.

22 pixel throw on tent mirror.

26 pixel throw on x translation.

Slit mask mechanism:

Dean is wrapping up software; it will be under keyword control in a few days.

Polarity issues waylaid Dean. This needs to be resolved before Dean finishes.

Sparc station – 1 DEI retiring moving to ultra 10 DEITRADER. It’s 90% done.

Rotation drive (Will): This is working. Fiducial marks are at 30-degree intervals and by going to each mark and reading Renishaw we can see if there are “twists.” There are a few “weird” points that are worth looking into.  6 counts repeatability – all Renishaw. 17 arc seconds error budget.

Bob: They had a software meeting yesterday.  They made the first draft of DEIMOS software. Punchlists were made. Also, there are two dozen items that are electrical and mechanical that affect software.

An intern is coming to be working with DEIMOS, starting June 12.

CfAO intern is coming here to work with Will. Heather will talk with Lisa Hunter about the interns.

4.  Electronics (Barry)

Hatch is wired and ready for testing.

Ran fiber optic cable to Electronics so PXL images can go to SHOPPE.

SCSI converter from CARA is ready for setup.

Interface box for PRMs for grating system; the box is built but it needs a cable.

Block diagram for complex stages should help CARA. This is on the web.

Ted is to do the AC wiring for cradle. He will also upgrade the rotation limit.

Carol and Ken worked on various stages. Grant Tolleth came by and talked to them.

Cable need to be run to PRM box. They also need to add over temperature shut down on the Electronics ring on Galil and CCD controllers.

Need to mount Lantronics and hub.

Carol is still working on CCD cables. Two were completed. There are a total of 12 needed.

Need to add wires for power locks.

5.  Optics

Ordered 6 ˝” square.  30 are coming in three to four weeks. The delivery of WG – 830 will take up to 3 months.

2” square TV filters are finished. Some were received from Custom Scientific.

Coating (Kirk): About the quotes on coating, updated parameters will be faxed to ZC & R and Bar.

ZC & R are probably who we will use. The process is hot:  “coat first, cement later.”

6.  Mechanical

Nose:

TV system is almost ready. It’s plumbed and wired. The mirrors will be put in tomorrow. No special alignment was needed. By Friday we should be able to take pictures.

Slit Mask:

Vern is working on getting it going. The plungers were defective. We may have to make our own. The grating was aligned. This is taking more time than originally thought.

One mask is hanging up on retraction – the mask was bent. Cause unknown currently.

Calibration System/FC Light System:

Matt is waiting on the quartz issue. Drew will Let Matt know if he needs to do anything. Original scheme will probably work. Matt is to build reflector.

Cladding:

Getting back to this, fans are wired.

Baffling:

Nothing new.

Glycol Cooling:

All hoses are in; finish hooking them up tomorrow.

Air Systems:

Interconnect panel is done, needs to be bolted on.

Interface Panel:

Glycol one is done, making mount.

Grating System: (Jack)

Slider 5 was put together. It is ready for flexure test or wiring.

In optics, Slider 4 was rotated. Jerry did some FEA analysis. He came up with some ideas. Also some encoder tests were performed. Dean is helping with software to help with these tests. Only in “Y”, though.

TV System:

Plumbed and wired.

Flexure:

In Y – seems to be in slider.

In X – camera/detector, collimator, slider. Not as far to go in X.

Trolley System:

Vern is building parts to test. Fabrication will begin soon. Drawings are needed; the goal is by the end of month.

7.  Alignment

Nothing new.

8.  Testing

K-testing of rotation is to be performed by De.

FCS tests: X translation stage backlash is much less than thought. We can come up with backlash compensation as a scheme.

9.  Site Report

Nothing new.

10.  Web Report (Heather)

Overall structure pictures are up.

11.  Shipping/Travel

Racks arrived; the closed container looks new.

Crates – Hardigg – got camera crates quote. Allow 4 – 6 weeks for delivery.

Dave needs to answer some insurance questions for Heather to give to Sal.

Travel - We got all urgent travel airline reservations taken care of.

12.  Schedule

The Readiness Review will be in early July. There is no official change. October 15 is the earliest that DEIMOS would arrive in HI.
