DEIMOS TEAM MEETING
05-15-01

Attendees: Sandy Faber, Dave Cowley, Vern Wallace, Ken Dietsch, Jeff Lewis, Jerry Cabak, Matt Radovan, Barry Alcott, Chris Wright, Dave Hilyard, Bob Kibrick, Heather Mietz, Jack Osborne, Will Deich, Drew Phillips

1.  Next Meeting:

June 7th , 10:30 a.m.

2.  CCDs, Mosaic, Controllers, etc.

Controllers/VME:

Bob may do a conference call with Motorola tomorrow. If we want to try, Bob Leach will send PAL chips to alter timing.

Mosaic:

Kirk (per Dave) had the backplane drilled with holes, tested, and is determining the size of Delrin bumpers.

Dewar:

Fabricating new LN2 can - unknown finish date - will change with old one when instrument is taken apart.

3.  Software (Bob)

Will worked the rotation drawing. The torque issue isn't well understood, but we should still move forward.

De will put k-test together. One hour window of setup time is too small. Someone should be here while that is taking place.

Will work up script to look at torque in regards to position angle. Why on the overlapped segments is one huge?

De: HP temperature sensor data logging file has plots. All is well behaved except sensor #3 - pursue this further.

Dean: He is back and better, finishing slit mask software tomorrow, grating software tests going on. Motion of slider to be tested on Friday.

Steve and Bob - They are mostly done with CCD keyword library; also with VME and crate. PANE keywords are working.

Steve will work on lickserv2 next week.

De: DS9 did latest build and using for tests.

Piezo is working. Carol and De did sequence of tests, and it seems okay on all possible angles. Dick noticed it moved violently when De started it. Dave wants to see this.

4.  Electronics

Carol and De are working on Piezo and temperature sensors.

Work continues on cradle AC circulation breaker box and rotation wiring.

Barry will add wiring to controller for Will. This should take half a day.

Grating slide stage and primary limits temperature were installed and checked. He was asked to add a second slotted switch. Barry got in parts and will wire them in later this week. He will need to add wires to Controller #2.

Ken worked on grating clamps. About the grating, safety switch was wired to all clamps to disallow motor control - will start on.

Ken - working with spares inventory. There was a problem with the quartz lamp last night. The fuse is blowing. Ken will look at the cabling next time.

Carol and De are working on cables. Carol is done with 1/2 of all connectors.

5.  Optics

Filters - Got price quote and delivery on Schott filters. There is a problem on one. The RG830 is not available. There is a discount on the BG1, 2 are a maximum of 4 mm thick. Schott does not make 6 mm ones. Schott says all on web page available except RG830. They are hard to get from Germany.

Test filter is being re-polished to fix wave front error.

Started production of clear TV filter. This should be done by the end of week.

6.  Mechanical

Nose Area: Dave wants the hatch hooked up.

Slit Mask:

Vern modified and reinstalled the slit mask system. He is done with preliminary alignment. 13 S/M need to be made. Vern is to give drawings to shop and wants to do some tests.

Calibration System:

We can plug into dirty power supply Thursday if issue the quartz issue is unresolved.

Matt says with TV system in, the filter wheel might be making a shadow.

FC Light System:

Broken fiber was replaced. There will always be some exposed. Matt wants to look at flexure data when available.

Cladding:

Using hatches, and arcs are being attached to the drive disk.

Baffling:

The wood right now is working.

Glycol Cooling:

All parts in. Will start assembly pressure test and run to TV camera this week.

Air system:

The panel is complete.

Interface panel:

The design needs to be worked on.

Grating System:

There was a major problem with the clamps. It is now solved. The cable wrap for tilt is almost done.

Sliders 5 is being built. Access to door to gratings is dependent on cladding.

TV system:

Is on and hope to have coolant to it next week. The mount for the mirror is going on today.

Long slits - we have 1 blank and have material.

Instrument trolley system:

Vern doing the calculations that Keck wants.

Flexure:

Sandy performed 2 flexure tests. 1 in grating: 40 pixels in Y, 20 in X. Last night - 8 pixels peak to peak in mirror. So either grating is not installed properly or there is an issue with the grating support. We suspect slider 3 is the problem. The results for the mirror are better than expected.

Dave says should have a meeting on how to proceed soon. Meeting is on Thursday, 9:30 a.m.

7.  Alignment

The mirror in slider 2 is at the wrong angle. Drew and Sandy to go back to this.

8.  Testing

Nothing else, rotation k-test next week.

9.  Site Report

No Greg, but there was a teleconference in the morning. They have a new mechanical engineer.

10.  Web Report (Heather)

Will be posting overall structure pictures next week.

11.  Shipping/Travel

Crane: King Crane will need a 15 ton to get the flat rack off of chassis. A 70 ton crane is needed for subsequent trips back to Lick. Jeff to look into cribbing.

Crates: Jerry talked to manufacturers. Will have drawings next week.

Travel: Double check travel times with travelers.

Everything is done except Kona Transport and insurance matters.

12.  Schedule

Readiness review for June 6th . If we don't make June 6th, we will push the commissioning back 24 days to time it with the next bright period.
