DEIMOS TEAM MEETING
1/11/01

Attendees: Dave Cowley, Heather Mietz, Sandy Faber, Carol Harper, Barry Alcott, Vern Wallace, Jack Osborne, Kirk Gilmore, Dave Hilyard, Ken Dietsch, Chris Wright

1.  Next Meeting:

February 5, 2001, 1:30 p.m.

The DEIMOS team meeting that was planned for January 24, 2001 is canceled.

2.  CCDs, Mosaic, Controllers, etc.

CCDs:

Nothing new.

Mosaic:

We are planning to remove the blue mosaic from the dewar tomorrow so we can preserve the mosaic (there will be no changes to it). It will be used to put the dewar back together in March. At that point it will be operating in 16 amp mode.

Metrology on the red mosaic with Lincoln Lab Lot 14 devices will begin in February. The long term plan is that this mosaic goes in when Deimos is disassembled for shipping (around August 2001).

Dewar:

The dewar is out of the instrument and will be in the Optics shop next week. It will stay here in February as some fixes are made. The flexure needs to be reduced and the x-stage motion needs to be increased.

Controllers:

The controllers will be removed from the instrument because the controllers are very expensive, and there is no need to have them in the instrument at this time. Chris will use the FC controller to check out the video amps.

3.  Software

No one in attendance.

4.  Electronics (Barry)

Ken added lockouts on the slit mask cassettes. He and Carol are learning keywords with Dean and De.

Carol is verifying communications with the ring equipment and is tuning grating tilt #4. She also updated the temperature sensor documentation.

Grating tilt #4 has been released to software, and Dean is working on the code for it. · Grating tilt #1 still needs to get done but is postponed for now.

There had been a problem where we ran out of IO bits, but Barry was able to come up with some extras. He has documented what he did.

Cabling - Barry talked to Lloyd this week about the CCD cables. Lloyd had some ideas about bundling the cables differently. Barry will do some testing this week and will determine if it's possible to re-work the existing cables. Barry is also generating cable wiring documentation.

Ken worked with Vern on the door system. He also worked with Jack on the grating slide positions. The CCD focus and x-stage worked perfectly before he bundled some cables. He will check to see if he disturbed something.

5.  Optics

There is still no explanation for the optical aberration that Sandy found. She is performing some Zemax tests.

6.  Mechanical

Slit Mask:

Vern is tuning the plungers, and this system should be released early next week. We have about 4-5 masks now. Changes will need to be made to recalibrate the gear box. He will ask Jeff about these changes on Monday. The slit mask needs to be ready for software on the 19th of this month.

Calibration System:

The emission lamp system is done. The quartz system is good for the time being, but the fibers need to be fixed eventually.

FC Light System:

We now have 4 fibers. All 4 were seen, and the intensity is adequate. The system seems to work.

A decision to take the frame transfer off the schedule was made by Sandy and Bob.

Ken believes the quartz bulb is overdriven, but the fan provides enough air movement that it hasn't seemed an issue. However, voltage drive means color changes - this needs to be looked at.

Cladding:

The cladding at the back end was started, but since Matt Thompson isn't back yet, not too much progress was made. Matt should be coming back in February.

Baffling:

Vern mocked up the front end baffling, and Sandy liked the proposal. Sandy was wondering if there are other ways to add additional blackening treatments and to treat the surfaces. We'll make some tests to see how effective they might be.

Glycol Cooling:

We ordered parts for this, and schematics exist. Bill Mason and Jim Bell will be coming in mid-February, and they should bring connectors that they like to us then.

Grating System:

Ken, Carol, and Jack met about coming up with a plan for the motor, fiducials and clamps. We have gone as far as we can manually. All looks good so far.

We worked with 4 clamps and put them at different angles and positions with slider #2.

Flexure:

The main project for the flexure this week is to modify the grating box and replace the current .5 inch bottom plate with a 1 inch bottom plate. Plan 'B' (if this doesn't work) is to put together a space frame to replace the grating box. Matt Radovan will work on this once he returns.

Other sources of flexure are in the dewar - 4 thousandths peak to peak. This needs to be reduced. The collimator is a known issue as well. Sandy suggested a flexure diagnosis. A flexure review meeting will be scheduled with Drew between the times of 9:00-10:00 a.m. tomorrow.

Structure:

We're planning to put the rotation drive back on sometime next week. It will be driven with a 12volt power supply.

Vern ordered parts to weigh Deimos.

7.  Alignment

Nothing new.

8.  Testing

A Pre-ship Review is planned at the end of June 2001. This means testing needs to start at the end of April to get 2 months in.

9.  Site Report (no Keck call-in)

Jim Bell is Deimos' technical contact person at Keck, and he is working on Deimos half time as of January 2001. Dave and Jim have been talking for most of this week and will discuss more about DEIMOS the week of January 20th.

Jim is working on the schedule - CARA is planning for an August 2001 shutdown. For us, the cable wrap will be the big item to complete during this time.

Heather to get Jim Bell on the mailing list for DEIMOS. Dave should ask Hilton if anyone else should go on it.

January 16th is the next telephone conference, at 10:30 am.

10.  Web Report (Heather)

Heather is updating the past team meeting minutes so everyone is on the same page. She will send out current ones a few days after each meeting. After that, she will work on the SSC presentation website changes she and Sandy discussed.

11.  Shipping/Travel

Dave has talked to contact at Matson and there was some discussion about Deimos going into the ship's hold. There is one ship that Deimos can go on. Dave wants to go to Oakland and look at this ship.

Sandy wants Dave to make a draft of requirements for the shipping process. We might also want to talk to someone who has shipped something similar.

We need to talk to Sal about insurance. We will talk about this in February.

Jim Bell has contacted the crane people, and we need to make reservations for this quickly.

12.  Schedule

Dave will make a rough draft of the quarterly report for Quarter 26 which is needed for the SSC meeting next week. Please respond promptly.

If the October 1 ship date is met, DEIMOS will be functional on December 7th. December 28th is a full moon, so this is our projected first light date.
