DEIMOS Team Meeting

5-18-00

Attendees:     Dave Cowley, Vernon Wallace, Heather Mietz, Carol Harper, Jeff Lewis, Jack Osborne, Matt Radovan, Dave Hilyard, Chris Wright, Richard Stover, Barry Alcott, Kirk Gilmore, Bob Kibrick and Sandy Faber

1.    Next Meeting:

·         June 1, 2000 10:30 a.m.

2.    Detector/ Mosaic Kirk’s summary:

·         #10-10-4 was sent to Luppino and returned, dressed to moly block, and will start assembling into mosaic.

·         #10-10-1 in Engineering mosaic – seems to be a drive electronics issue, as it worked in different Dewar.  Chris will get it next.

·         #9-6-5 (originally in pos. 7) was dead in the Dewar. It has been tested and thought to be dead from static. MIT devices seem to be more vulnerable.

·         CCD’s are being cleaned and assembly  starts on the mosaics next week. Kirk should be done by the end of month.

·         Thermal wiring – Kirk worked on it a lot and thinks it will have to be redone. The leads aren’t insulated, capacitors have short wires and Kirk is afraid of shorts via vibrations when inside a working DEIMOS. Barry to assist as he can.

·         Bob is still concerned about CCD #7 and wants to test signals at connectors once it’s warmed up.

3.    Dewar

Flexure Control Devices – Chris Wright

·         There was some difficulty when installing the electrical box. Cooling started yesterday.  There was a small crack near the 61 pin connector, so a leak seal was used to fix this.

·         FC connector plate is too fragile, so we have ordered new connectors. We won’t change them all out unless the seal doesn’t work. If the seal is o.k., then we’ll change out at a later date.

Engineering Mosaic – Chris Wright

·         The Engineering mosaic was at -95° yesterday with good images.  The only device that was saturated was CCD #1. Something happened on the video board in the controller.

4.    Camera

·         It is in its shipping box and is waiting to go into spectrograph.  The  mount will be done next week. There will be tests on the box, such as putting weight in the box and dropping it to see how it holds up. When we ship it, we’ll make it look valuable.

·         There are still some thermal tests outstanding.

5.    Software (Bob)

·         We are almost done with the Exposure Meter – probably will be done next week.

·         Bob and Steve will be done with the mosaic descrambling next week.

·         De is almost done with the DS9, so we’ll get real time images.

·         Dean and Will are working on getting Will up to speed on Galil.

·         Filter Wheel – Software will be able to work on this when Electronics is done with it sometime next week.

·         Grating – in about 3 weeks, software will be able to work on the “Grating Tilt Mechanism”

·         Personnel – informal acceptance for the Mt. Hamilton position. June 19th is supposed to be the start date.

·         Karl (NICS) will be gone in two weeks, and there is no interim plan yet. The software group will have to manage this until a replacement is found.

6.    Electronics (Barry Alcott)

·         The last Galil amplifier returned from Hawaii (was there as a spare until the real spare was shipped).  Carol has modified it per Ken’s upgrade to keep the motors from jumping on power down.  Carol has also checked all axes functionality.

·         The Filter wheel temporary wiring is done and we are ready to tune the servo loop.

·         Most cables have been run through cable wrap.  This includes AC power cables, coax cables, the hatch open lockout cable, and a single duplex fiber optic cable. Per Bob, we need to make sure the cables don’t leak light before installation.

·         A temporary AC power circuit has been activated on the barrel portion of the instrument.

·         All components for the AC power distribution system have been purchased with the exception of the circuit breakers. (To be ordered soon)

·         Nineteen-inch rack mountings for the various electronics boxes have been fabricated.  Only the PXL camera controller is left to do.

·         Ready to mount control box for cradle motion.

·         Would like to have AC outlets mounted on both cradle and barrel.  May require knowledge of how the various electronics areas will be enclosed. We need to meet about this and get a plan together.

·         Carol has PXL camera running though we are having intermittent problems.

·         Built & delivered 2 CCD cables with 90 degree angle back shells.

·         After UPS meeting we decided to proceed with original plan.  That is, to supply a UPS for the detector chain and a second one for the control electronics.  We will also provide the hardware “hooks” for a UPS for the second beam control electronics.

·         Carol replaced the power supply in the FC VME crate.  Also bought a spare.

·         Installed a backplane stiffener in FC VME crate.

·         Installed a fiducial on the grating slide – also built spare.

·         On ESI – used Bellden cables with PBC jackets that harden in cold. Polyethylene ordered for manual paddles. The current agreement is that we need to stop building with PBC and use other in the future. Will need material.

7.    Optics (Dave H)

·         The Dewar window which had been RTV’d was removed and ground. There was no coating damage, and it is ready for installation.

·         The tent mirror which went to Mt. Hamilton to be aluminized seems to be in good shape. The mirror is now in shipping container.

·         Dave is working on the two mirrors for the TV guider.

·         Ca Fluoride (Dave C.) – the ingot exists, but has not been generated yet per confirmation on whether Optovac will continue to grow large crystals. Meeting on guiders – Vern, Sandy, Matt, and Dave. Wednesday the 24th of May at 2:30.

8.    Collimator (Jack)

·         A dummy collimator was made out of aluminum.

·         Counterweight seems good.

·         The glass could go in when needed.

9.    Tent Mirror

·         The tent mirror is aluminized, and the dummy is in Deimos.

·         Per Jack, there is no guard around glass.  This is being designed now. Changes in the support mean Jack is confident the glass could go in.

·         Piezo is bench-tested and can go to the software group soon.

10.           Slit Mask System

·         Vern- the form is designed, and can go to Carol today. There is 1-2% vignetting, so this should be discussed. Sandy to talk to Vern 5/22 at 11 a.m.

·         Fibers- Matt moved fiber locations and talked to Sandy about it. We have images from PXL camera, but no photometry.

·         Matt needs to finish the slit-plane design, and this depends on the baffle size.

11.           Grating System

·         All parts are done and are in the Instrument shop waiting for tear down and modifications. We still need slide tests, but all drawings are done.

·         After slide testing, we will tear down. Before the tear down, Sandy wants to review with Jack what was found. 5/22 meeting will start discussion regarding this.

12.           TV System

·         Drawings were released and parts are being made.  Several more weeks are needed to finish.

13.           Calibration System

·         No Report.

14.           FC Light System

·         No Report

15.           Filter Wheel

·         Mechanically assembled and in Electronics.

16.           Structure

·         Cable wrap is a big part of this, and is being done by Electronics

17.           Alignment

·         No alignment until major parts are in.

18.           Site Report (Greg from Keck)

·         There hasn’t been time to look at slit mask system, as the LRIS B team has arrived there.

·         A note about coating: They used “Dream coating” from Livermore, and the lead time was a month.  The cost was about $48k last he heard.

·         They ordered a copper neon line lamp from Photon.

·         LRIS B review – teleconferences are needed with Bob Kibrick and others. Hilton will arrange these.

·         DEIMOS teleconferences are needed in the separate groups- mechanical, electrical and software. Greg will call Dave to set these up.

·         Tom Bida is leaving CARA in a month, and plans are in works to deal with this.

19.           Web

·         The excel problem with downloading Excel files from Netscape has been fixed and tested.

20.           Q23

·         Heather has draft.

21.           Schedule

·         July 1st for Dewar in Spectrograph
