DEIMOS Team Meeting

4/20/00

Attendees:     Jeff Lewis, Barry Alcott, Jack Osborne, David Hilyard, Heather Mietz, Chris Wright, Dave Cowley, Sandy Faber, Matt Radovan, Kirk Gilmore and Richard Stover

1.      Next Meeting:

·         May 18, 2000 10:30 a.m.

2.      Detector/Array

·         On the mosaic metrology front, Sandy and Kirk found a way to measure the CCDs “bareback”.  There were 7 CCDs to assemble, and 6 assembled without trouble.  One was more difficult, but is now successfully assembled.  Gerry has the 8th, but there is no news on the repairs.

·         The 7th CCD is dead in the lab Dewar (it never worked in DEIMOS Dewar).  It will be looked at closely under a microscope to see if there is a physical problem.

·         Sandy Faber is worried that #7 is dead possibly as a result of something we did. Richard will put #3 CCD (which already has problems) in the #7 slot in case there’s an issue that will damage anything. Kirk will clean it first.

3.      Dewar

·         The next cool down on the dewar is tomorrow, 4-21-00. We will cool down with the new window and with a cover over the new ion pump. The Zeolite is baked. Pumping will occur tomorrow and cool through the weekend.

·         Per Chris Wright, the CTE measurements are 5° cooler than M. Wei sees on lab CCD devices. Therefore our actual operating temperature will be between -90° and -95°.

·         Chris will test the FC controller and connect the hermetic controller today. He will have them tested Monday 24th or Tuesday 25th.

·         The ion pump is emitting gamma rays, and we are looking into different solutions.

4.      Shutter

·         Matt is planning modifications. Bruce is using linear servomotors - Matt is interested in these results.  Since  the shutter needs to go in by the 2nd week in June (and will be hard to get out), Dave C. suggests we go with the functional one we have. If we have problems while testing, then we will take further action.

·         We have six weeks to do anything to this shutter. Modifications will be made so shutter can be worked on while installed into DEIMOS (without having to remove it). Also, we can probably add different Bimba cylinders later because of these special modifications that we are doing.

5.      Camera

·         No more testing per Sandy.

·         Camera mount can go into DEIMOS and stay.

6.      Software (Bob Kibrick)

·         The temperature readings worked (per the CCD run).

·         The FCS controller is booted and running.

·         De has been working on a prototype of a mask design, and the web–based validity check is running.  We still need to talk to CARA about security issues per the web.

·         Dean is working on Galil controllers and slit mask.

·         Steve and Bob are still working on the mosaic keywords and descrambling.

·         Tuesday afternoon is the Deimos software meeting.

·         Mt. Hamilton position – we are waiting on acceptance of an offer.

7.      Electronics (Barry Alcott)

·         The AC power distribution design done. Per the UPS issue, none of the power is backed up at Keck where we need it to be. A meeting will follow after this one.

·         Interlocking on rotation – the boxes are built and ready to test.

·         Ken’s surgery on back seemed to go well, he will assess in two weeks. He believes he will be out of work for 4-6 weeks.

·         Carol is working with Dean on Galil and is learning the Lantronics program.

·         The modifications were done on the FC controller to enable the shutter modifications to allow two more signals to the controller.

·         Two boards will need to be relayed out that in order to allow the passage of signals to the shutter controller. There is a large turnaround time for this, and Chris is busy.

·         Patch panel for cables into wrap – Barry doing layout since there have been changes (from DEIMOS to KECK).

·         Dave Cowley wants electronics installed into DEIMOS soon so as to alleviate the pressures of putting them in too near the end. Barry is looking into what wire is needed for this.

8.      Optics

·         Since the 1st Dewar window was successful, Dave Hilyard stopped fabrication of the 2nd (it will take a few days to finish if we do want it).

9.      Structure

·         The counterweight is in and checked.

·         The camera mount can get installed when Vern is back on Monday, April 24th.

10.      Collimator

·         The cell is installed, and measurements do need to be made.

11. Tent Mirror

·         The tent mirror is in the optical shop being glued. We will do a new test on Monday the 24th on a non-crucial piece of material.

·         Aluminizing has been delayed a few weeks. An aluminum piece will be installed on it, and we’re are confidant we can swap out glass for it. We need to think about protection for it.

12.  Slit Mask

·         Matt moved the scissors lift.

·         The drawings have been reconciled with what was built.

·         Terry and Matt did not think the axis of tilt of the fibers should be changed and will talk to Sandy. Matt and Sandy to go over this in more detail after this meeting.

·         Vern will work on new form when he gets back. There are nine issues to look at, but nothing major.

13. Grating System

·         Sliders 3 and 4 are almost ready for the slide.

·         The cells almost ready to be installed.

·         The alignment jig is waiting for hard pads.

·         In the area of testing, Jack is working with Carol now on torque and measurements.

14.  TV System

·         This is the next system whose drawings we will give to Jeff, and Jack will proof them first.

15.  Calibration System

·         Matt looked at LRIS documentation.

·         Per Sandy, our problems are in the blue spectra.  We might have found a possible lamp in ESO and are waiting to hear from them. There is another lamp company which is sending Sandy a book of lamp spectra. If we use penrays, we need a mercury lamp to supplement the issues with blue spectra. Since Sandy is leaving, we need to check what we have vs. LRIS (supplies and lamps).

16.  FC Light System

·         Matt stopped some work when he found drawing discrepancies but will start again soon. He wants to get Terry involved since Sandy will be gone.

·         A reminder that we are going to make 8 fibers (4 spares).

17. Filter Wheel

·         The rework started today in the Instrument shop and will take one week.

18. Alignment

·         No report.

19. Site Report

·         No report.

20. Web Site (Heather)

·         The electronics shop and Heather had a meeting where they went over using web tools and creating directory structure consistently.  We also went over the issues we need to address based on the fact that the web site is a product that needs to be shipped with the instrument.  We agreed to go in and change the existing absolute links to relative as we found them.

·         The first CCD images are now posted.

·         A “Test results procedure” page has been posted.  This give all the details and links needed for anyone to send files with consistent names to Heather to post.  Images are also included in this set of procedures. Jack has tried this and it seems to work fine.

·         Heather is running tests on the best method using Dreamweaver to move pages around the site to “clean up” the underlying directories.  This will help in the future when we need archival information.

·         The Netscape/Excel issues are still not fixed, although NICS and Heather have tried several tests which point increasingly to it being a UNIX server issue.  Heather will contact De directly to see if she has ideas.

21. Q23

·         The Team’s comments are due today.  Sandy has Q22 and is reviewing.

22. Schedule

·         See handout (there have been few changes since last meeting).
