DEIMOS Team Meeting

2/23/00

Attendees:     Dave Cowley, Vern Wallace, Jack Osborne, Sandy Faber, Terry Mast, Barry Alcott, Chris Wright, Heather Mietz, Jeff Lewis, David Hilyard, Bob Kibrick, Richard Stover, Greg Wirth (by phone)

1.      Next Meeting:

·         March 9, 9:30 am

2.      Detector  (Richard)

·         We got 4 devices out of Lots 9 and 10 – 3 out of our top 4 picks, all Grade A. We now have 8 devices of our own in house.

·         Lot 14 – Lincoln is doing these right now and supposedly they have corrected the AR coating issue. Gerry Luppino has sent them packages. Lot 14 have higher quantum efficiencies and are thicker. We plan to put them on the red side of the array if we find 4 good ones.

3.      Dewar (Kirk not here, Dave C. reports)

·         Dewar was pumped by turbo pump cart and will continue until tomorrow.  We’ll run a mass scan and then cool.  It will be run cold through weekend, and we’ll see what condenses out.  The engineering mosaic will go in next week if the condensation is gone from the chips.

·         There was cold trap contamination – possibly oil?  More research is needed before we know what it is.

·         #3 backplate went to heat treaters today and will go to be double disk ground when done to help flatten it.

·         Mosaic:

§            Terry Mast can measure the backplane when done with microscope facilities tweaking.

§             Jeff will machine the Moly pads today or tomorrow (2/23-2/24).  Dave H. will use 3 types of measuring  to determine how much to remove.

§            Connector plate on FC is 180° out of phase so needs to be flipped.  FC control box flange interferes somewhat, so this will be fixed today (2/23).

4.      Camera

·         Vern:

§             Dewar window is RTV’d and tested-OK.

§            Bladders are in body #3

§            Fluid in body #5 will be finished today (2/23).

§            Assembly of bodies 4 and 5 will start after the fluid is in body #5.

§            Bubble in body #1 needs to be removed.

§            Element #3 springs need adjusting.

·         Camera Testing: The test fixture drawings for the stand needed for camera tests are in the shop.

·         Note from Sandy: Going over ORA material which is taking a long time, but knows she needs to get Vern the #s for assembly.  Assembly will take place next week, so Sandy will have figures by March 1.

5.      Software (Bob Kibrick)

·         Bob and De were gone last week. Bob is working in SPIE paper now, but will be ready for engineering mosaic tests next week.

·         Steve – Continuing on mosaic descrambling.

·         Bob – finished upgrading the CCD lab’s readout software.  Still needs to look at CCD lab’s controller.

·         Dean – still working on exposure meter – finishing up and testing today (2/23).

·         Sandy and Bob to talk about how staffing issued in software are affecting the schedule.

·         Sun Microsystems computer grant: Per Sandy, we were awarded a grant to buy upgrades at a lower price - $15, 000.  Bob and Steve to prepare Order Memo to buy these upgrades.

·         Robert Myckland needs a framework of when we will need him so not booked up-Dave C. to think about and determine dates.

6.      Electronics (Barry)

·         The data (from the warm up test) from the data logger was lost – Barry working on program to upload it continuously but won’t be done before the cool down.

·         Schematics are being done now as things change with ESI.

·         Temporal measurements in first cool down had variations that should be explored. Dave says it corresponds with when the LN2 can ran out. Ken will convert from volts to temperature and get real time figures.

·         AC power distribution – Barry needs to know what should be computer resettable vs. switches. Since Greg Wirth is coming 3/8 – 3/9, should discuss then.

·         Need to start fitting electronics into instrument ring – we have 2 bays with mounting rails, CCD controller, and power supply.

·         Barry wants to consider populating the cable bundle so we can add motor controllers. As a start, the panel needs to be located on Deimos (and we need to look at how to run cables from panel to parts of the instrument). Vern, Barry, Dave C., Jack and Jeff to discuss.

·         Shutter systems – ESI still having issues, opening blade occasionally tardy. Ted made some changes to the shutter control box for Deimos to give us more control, Barry, Chris and Bob to discuss further.

·         Chris:

§            CCD controller-Added coaxial length for video output to compensate for pre-amplifier oscillation.

§             Updated the pre-amplifier for test dewar, and Kirk and he exchanged the CCD controller and verified signals.

§            Test dewar will be running with the swapped CCD controllers by end of week (2/25).

§            FC CCD controller not checked with its electronic box for continuity; this is a big upcoming task.

§            Bill Brown cleaned the boards with alcohol and baked to clean.

7.      Optics (also see Item #4, Camera)

·         Dave C. to get new price from Optovac for element #5 lens.

8.      Structure

·         Per Jack, the counterweight materials are all here and ready to be built.

9.      Collimator

·         Needs to be painted white – Jack to deal with.

10. Tent Mirror

·         No fixtures needed for aluminization in red chamber at Mt. Hamilton. This will happen sometime after March 8. Dave Hilyard should accompany, as fragile!

·         Testing – not done yet.

11.  Slit Mask

·         Scissors aren’t on instrument yet but will be this week.

·         Review projections and fiber placement.

12. Grating System

·         Testing has started – initial tests are good.  Need to measure torque, but voltage coming out of controller.

·         After this, will do horizontal and vertical tests to determine how out of balance it is. Following this will be the alignment tests.

·         Sliders 3 and 4 will be done in 2 weeks if 2 people are able to work on them.

·         Jig is being finished.

·         Slider 2 is complete.

13.  TV System

·         Matt and Jack found the shutter but need to see if actually works. Bob K. knows the software so can assist with setting it up when Matt needs for fiber testing.

14.  Calibration System (Matt not here)

·         Sandy and Matt making progress. Lamp specifications from LRIS are available from Greg to Matt.  Dimensions will be determined when engineer goes up to measure on 2/28. Bill Mason can provide info as well. Sandy asked that the engineer also look at lamp mounting and suggested pictures would be helpful. The calibration system design still has 3/15 as a due date.

15.  FC Light System

·         Matt and Sandy will do demo soon in which they look at the FIS beam with the photometrics camera.

16. Filter Wheel

·         All parts are in and assembly will take 1 person 2 days.

17. Alignment

·         Nothing new.

18. Site Report

·         Greg will be here March 8 and 9. He will review specifications and deliverables list  then. Greg to send list of issues to Dave and coordinate meetings around these. Tom Bida should also be involved with these meetings.

·         It is estimated the Nasmyth modifications will take 2 weeks, and Greg will schedule as time draws closer.

19. Web Site

·         Meeting today to discuss new site proposal, test form and Design systems breakdown.

20. Q 22

·         Dave is finishing the first draft.

21. SSC Meeting

·         March 14th, here in engineering.

22. Schedule

·         Dewar and camera still priorities.
