DEIMOS Team Meeting

1/27/00

Attendees:     Dave Cowley, Vern Wallace, Jack Osborne, Sandy Faber, Terry Mast, Barry Alcott, Chris Wright, Ken Dietsch, Heather Mietz, Kirk Gilmore, Jeff Lewis, David Hilyard, Matt Radovan, Bob Kibrick

1.      Next Meeting:

·         February 10, 9:30 am (Thursday)

2.      Agenda:

·         Add to this (and future) agendas: Site involvement, Collimator, and Website (updating, keeping current).

3.      Detector

·         Kirk produced an engineering device and has suggestions for improving the process (mainly moving the bumpers).

·         MIT/LL: (Sandy) -  Pertaining to the new AR coating, we might have a couple with the new coating but have not reviewed them for performance yet.

·         Warm Tests: (Bob) – There are 10 CCDs in the dewar.  The readouts at room temperature produced no useful data.  However, with partial cooling, we received about 100 rows of data out of 4 of the CCDs, indicating good signal continuity. The images received have been saved and should be on the web shortly. There were some problems encountered, but other than these, the electronics inside the CCD controller are OK:

§          There was oscillation in the pre-amplifiers due to the longer cable of the boards in the dewar. Chris will work on and take apart.

§          Electrical boxes – 2 look the same, but 1 is 180° turned so labeling of Channels A and B are opposite. Wiring will need to be changed inside.

§          The analog switchboard has wiring issues.

§          There is a short in one of the boxes.

·         Sandy – it should be mentioned theses are remarkable achievements for the Electronics department.

·         FC (Kirk) – The Science grade devices are tested and waiting for array. There are 2 devices on the engineering mosaic that are not dead but aren’t great. Per Dave, when the engineering mosaic goes in the dewar it should be wired up to the hermetic connectors so we can run the devices.  There was some question about Kirk’s needing to cold test the MIT chips with this controller since the cold test is happening sooner – this subject will be revisited in a week or so.

Action Items/to be discussed further

q     Meeting between Richard, Sandy, Chris, Bob, and Terry on Tuesday the 1st, 10 am, at Richard’s office.

q     Once Heather receives the images from the test from Bob, they will be put on the web.

q     Kirk’s MIT chip test – decision needed on whether he needs to do these cold.

4.      Dewar (after this meeting, look at the task list of steps needed to run it cold)

·         GOALS- cool down dead mosaic packages by next Friday; install engineering mosaic by end of the following week.

·         Backplane issue (Dave C.): There are 2 backplanes that are identical except  that #1 was not heat treated (and so is not as flat as required).  #2 currently has the engineering devices on it and is reasonable flat. We need to replace #1 (and make more holes in the replacement). The goal will be to put the science mosaic on the #3 backplane (yet to be fabricated).

5.      Camera

·         Vern:

§            Bodies 4 and 5 are back and assembled.

§            Elements 7 and 8 have been RTV’d into body #5, and element 8 is curing.

§            Plan: RTV element #9 on 2/2/00, and Vern is creating an assembly procedure for this currently.

§            Goal: Camera assembly complete February 14. Vern is currently writing procedures for this and minor tooling will be needed.  Design of a test fixture will also be needed.

§            Dewar window: will be RTV’d in a week later than Element 9

Action Items/to be discussed further

q     Meeting to discuss procedure for assembly today at 3:30 pm with Terry M, Sandy and Vern.

q     Dave C. is looking into whether we should use actual camera mount.

6.      Software (Bob Kibrick)

·         De: evaluating ESI lists-SAO development effort finally worked out; fixed definition table nailed down and she’s doing parsing now.

·         Steve and Bob – mosaic descrambling message definition nailed down, Steve may be off a couple more weeks on personal issues.

·         Bob – needs to upgrade the CCD lab with software update so up to date (a couple years old at this point). Will begin this afternoon.

·         Deimos software meeting last week – have list of first stages that will appear (with Jim’s help)

7.      Electronics  (Barry)

·         The manual paddles have been re-connectorized.

·         Ken and Jim found problem in Galil motor which occurs during power down – Galil says we’re using opposite logic than industry standard.  Ken made modifications to amplifier and is documenting it.  Every board will need these modifications – 5 Deimos boards, 1 spare; takes about 3 hours per board, and 2 are done already.

·         UPS units are in, need to start looking into their installation.

·         Deimos ion pump controller is in Hawaii – waiting for repair parts and then will get it back.

·         Ken got the equipment history web page up – to keep track of amplifier changes, etc.

·         Data on rotation dewar stages – manual push button stations – Barry has drawings for the needed holes, etc.  Barry to send email around on this.

8.      Optics

·         It's been 133 days since we filled Body #1 with fluid.  It is presently stored horizontally in a shipping box.  A check this morning showed no signs of leaking.  The three tiny bubbles seen when we flipped the cell in it's vertical orientation were still not visible in it's horizontal orientation.  It will need back lighting in a vertical position to find them again.

·         Body #3 remains in the vertical stand awaiting a check on the alignment prior to filling with fluid.

·         Vern, Terry and Dave H. assembled Element #7 into Body #4 and poured RTV around it on Jan. 13 (or 14), and the bond looks good, though it is hard to see.  We assembled Element #8 into Body #5 and poured RTV on Monday, Jan. 24.  The pour went well and the bond looks good, though curing won't be finished until Jan. 31.

·         Vern has finished the assembly procedures for Element #9 and for assembling the camera cells.  Dave has reviewed them and we've made a few changes.

·         On Monday, Jan. 31 we will remove Element #8 from the assembly, remove the RTV dam and clean and final assemble the doublet of Element #7 & Element #8.

·         We need to pot Element #9 and the Dewar window.  We will do Element #9 next week and the Dewar window the following week.

·         Jeff glued the pucks on the Tent Mirror, finishing the 3rd yesterday.  It needs to cure about a week.

9.      Structure

·         Camera mount is being painted, will be back Jan 31. Finished machining and measuring. Out for painting. Returns soon.

·         Jack - Counterweights for side B (135 lbs. plate plus 120 lbs. lead to balance the mount itself and 600  lbs. for lens and dewar when they are installed) are designed and material should be here today.

·         Removal of Grating system: Needs some modifications and then needs to be painted. It will be about  a week before the grating systems can be powered up and tested.  This is a priority.

·         Jack - Three studs are being installed today. They will mate the grating mount to the drive disk and the camera mount on the inside of the drive disk.

10. Slit Mask System

·         Matt – fiber modifications need to be done to form and tests need to happen. Vern may need entire new form – Terry and Sandy to take this up.

11.  Grating System

·         Alignment jig (Jack) - These items are being worked by Jeff today. The complete drawing package was reviewed with 3 shop people this week.

·         Chain guides were test fitted OK. They went out for anodizing this week.

·         Slider 2 is in the Instrument shop and almost done. Jack is inventorying and check-fitting this item. It is assembling well with only a few modifications to do and parts left to build.

·         Sliders 3 and 4 (Jack) - The drawing package for these two items was reviewed this week also. Gary is beginning the mill work on the flat pieces today.

Action Items/to be discussed further

q     Meeting to discuss fabrication of grating with Jack, Ken, Dave, Sandy, Terry – 2/1, 2:00 pm.

12. TV System
