DEIMOS Team Meeting 11/30/99 Attendees: Dave Cowley, Vern Wallace, Jack Osborne, Trent Freeman, Sandy Faber, Terry Mast, Barry Alcott, Chris Wright, Ken Dietsch, Kirk Gilmore, Jeff Lewis 1. Next Meetings: * December 14, 9:30 am (Tuesday) 2. Agenda Nothing to add 3. Schedule * Shop Priority List - discussed and results as follows: * Dewar: cool and disassemble for Bill. Goal is to have near-dead by the holiday break (Dec 23). * Camera: Cel 1 needs bladders, 4a and 4b need leak testing before Dec 23. Danco should have parts done week of Dec 6-10. * Structure: adding network system this week (collect data with Unix-based computer), control with laptop. Robert Myckland here for 2 weeks to do rotation tests. NOTE: do not add anything substantial in weight, as it's balanced now. * Grating System: Jeff has drawings, will have to be off to get camera in after holiday break. * Tent Mirror: glue parts to mirror by Dec 23. * Filter Wheel: need parts by Dec 23. 4. Testing * Dewar Test: Some backlash - couple of thousandths. Going to put spring in and stiffen flexure to fix. Modifications have been made and it's reassembled. Overall results: thousandth peak to peak in mosaic backplane/stageplate (formerly .0025, now .001). Action Items/to be discussed further * Sandy would like to discuss this further 5. Detector * Kirk - Sandy is up to date on MIT selection; Kirk is working on MIT chip, test Dewar, and FC devices. The first FC device is the best one. Of the other 2, 1 is not usable, the other might be usable. Both had hot columns. Bill is currently dicing up 2 more and will test the following week to see if we have 2 science grade devices as backup. Per Sandy, if these don't pan out, see if Grade B will work. * Sandy - partners visited last week and reviewed a table summary of tested devices. All agreed with Sandy's recommendation and will pick this week. * Need to discuss what goes in the near-dead Mosaic with Richard Stover. We will get 4 'A' CCDs (we already have 2), and there are lots of 'B's from lots 9 and 10. Lick is able to use the 'B's as long as we want. Kirk needs 2 'B's for the test Dewar. Action Items/to be discussed further * Dave wants near-dead built by mid-December. * Discuss CCD grades for near-dead with Richard. Mtg scheduled for the following Monday at 2pm. * Discuss with Trent the holes for the cover over FC. 6. Dewar * Cool down - Terry P. is out sick, so the dewar is not getting cooled right now (per Sandy's request to see the results of the new flexure modifications). Agreement to not do the additional cool-down, since 1) Terry's out, and 2) the fix was easy. * Mosaic Building * Terry M - this has been slightly delayed, as Bill is dicing devices. Were shooting for Mid-December with some cushion built in, but it will end up being the original deadline of before the holiday break. Before the assembling of the near-dead, all Lincoln CCDs are needed (2 on Mosaic A), as the current configuration calls for 2 near-dead Lincoln devices. Also need thermal hardware. * Chris W. - The testing is done up to the hermetic connectors, and this week will test all the way up to Boards 1 and 2 and the wire harness that goes up to the CCD. FC wire will arrive here right before the break or beginning of January. Action Items/to be discussed further * Near-dead built by before holiday break or immediately after January 3, 2000. * Chris W. to order more circuit boards now. 7. Camera * Vern: * Body 3 is assembled and measured. The axial tilt of Element 4 yielded good results. * The parts for bodies 4 and 4a are due this week. The shop should get drawings in a couple of days. * We have the bladder covers for body 1. * Plan: Get the drawings to Jeff who will finish QC on body 3; install the bladder covers on body 1; fill body 3 with fluid; begin test assembly for bodies 4 and 4a (will use a substitute material to account for the lens weight). * Test: will hang from crane - will loom for tilt as rotated and radial motion. Action Items/to be discussed further * Meeting to discuss mechanical and optical assembly (Vern to get Jeff drawings first), Tuesday at 9:00 am with Terry M, Sandy and Vern. 8. Software (No Bob Kibrick) Action Items/to be discussed further * Meeting to discuss where we stand with software; Dave C. to be there as well. 9. Electronics * Barry: * Rotation is working. There is a possible problem with jumping when the Galil motor is shut off. This is being looked into. * UPS's have been ordered. There is a possible issue with the battery life (having ordered them this far in advance), but we need the units here to work on clearance issues and possibly to cleave insulation for fit. * HP data logger program is available * The holes have not been filled on the boards that solder to the hermetic connectors - this needs to happen. 10. Structure * Access hatch - complete * Camera mount in progress. * Plating will go out today. 11. Slit Mask System * Nothing new. 12. Grating System * Will be starting on soon. 13. Tent Mirror * We have a design for the fixture, but no fixture yet. Will start next week, and need by end of February 2000. Dave wants a long cure time, then aluminized, hence the need to start early. Action Items/to be discussed further * Jack to look up exact adhesive and Sandy to call vendor to ask about aluminum coating. 14. TV System * Have design and drawings. 15. Calibration System * Matt will be working on this - Sandy wants meeting with Matt and Dave to discuss. 16. Filter Wheel * Parts being made, ahead of schedule. 17. FC system * Nothing new. 18. Alignment * A plan for camera alignment is being developed. *Trent's last day with Lick Observatory will be 12/10.
