DEIMOS TEAM MEETING
05/01/01

Attendees: Dave Cowley, Heather Mietz, Carol Harper, Jeff Lewis, Barry Alcott, Jerry Cabak, Jack Osborne, Chris Wright, Dave Hilyard, Ken Dietsch, Sandy Faber, Kirk Gilmore, Bob Kibrick, Matt Radovan, Drew Phillips

1.  Next Meeting:

Tuesday, May 15, 2001 1:00 p.m.

2.  CCDs, Mosaic, Controllers, etc.

Controllers:

The plastic covers are now ready to be installed.

Motorola Boards (Bob): Bob found an issue and sent Motorola our results. We are waiting for them to give us feedback. We could modify this, but then our boards are unique. The spares aren't easy to swap out.

Mosaic (Kirk):

Kirk says we will be making holes take 4 CCDs off the engineering backplane for the red side and experiment with the delrin bumpers.

Kirk has until August of this year to build the mosaic.

Metrology continues on the moly blocks, and they are also continuing to test the Lot 14 devices.

Dewar:

Terry is making an LN2 can. Ken is going to label the stages "forward" to equal positive. This is a general rule.

3.  Software (Bob)

Al Conrad from CARA was here last week. All CARA software was ported to Linux on rotation so both systems are talking.

The rotation system is operating under keyword control, and Will is going to test it on Monday and Tuesday of next week (12-1 pm). He will also need some more full days, even after 4:00 p.m., so a schedule needs to be established. Will also has concerns about balancing for rotation work he is doing. A script could be written to help this by giving feedback on a range of balance. Bob will tell Will about this further. Will should also talk to Barry and Jeff in regards to the script.

HP temp sensor: This is up and running. It is getting reasonable reading from all 20 sensors. De and Carol will coordinate with shops on this, although this could be done without the software and De. Carol will talk to De about this further. The "DEIMOS-WORK" should be used.

Piezo controller: This is hooked up, and De has reliable communication. We need to test the dummy tent mirror. We also need to know what the limits are for documentation. Dave will follow up as to when it is OK to do tests.

Slit mask software: Carol and Dean checked out the Galil, and all lines are reading correctly. Dean's surgery went well, and will be back on Monday, May 7.

We need spare memory boards, so Bob will get this order in because the fiscal year is coming up. He is currently getting quotes.

De will be bringing back the slit mask barcode reader.

De is trying to get the latest release of DS9 running. Solaris 2.8 is running on Deitrader and Celeste. They are currently having issues with RAID array and are currently looking into this.

4.  Electronics

Carol is working on the CCD cables, and she is also working with De on the piezo and HP temp sensor.

Ken ordered a spare interface cable and once it's received, he will then test the spare system for rotation. Ken is also working on the electronic spares database.

Ted says the breaker panel is ready to be installed in a couple days. He will upgrade the wire rotation.

The documentation for the slit mask and rotation are now included in the block diagrams.

Filter wheel numbers are retuned are on the web. There is some is concern with the cables in the cable wrap being abraded. Jack will look into this further.

The plastic cones are ready to be installed.

5.  Optics

Dave worked on the 6 ½ square inch filter assembly, and he saw three problems with it. He ended up solving 2 of these (the wedge was too thick and was causing a wave front) and is now dealing with the third. The last problem is it warped at high temperatures, so he is trying different cements and hopes that will solve the problem.

6.  Mechanical

Slit Mask:

The actuator is modified and ready to go on the instrument. The cassette needs to be modified as well, and the plungers will be here on Thursday.

Calibration System/FC Light System:

These are both on the instrument, with quartz fibers and tests to be run tomorrow. The FC fibers are also in.

Cladding/Baffling:

We will put the large plywood ring in. The design is simple. Nose cladding issues will be dealt with in the next two weeks.

Glycol Cooling:

The hoses should be coming in any day. The panel is assembled and needs to be hooked up.

Grating System (Jack):

Jack is still working the grating system, but many advances have been made. He is now measuring the grating flexure, and slider #2 will be done tomorrow. He is currently building slider #5.

Trolley System:

Most of the material is ordered for the trolley system, and we got the rack extension and the rail materials in.

The goal is to get DEIMOS ready to take images on Thursday or Friday. The 900 line grating should be in at that point.

7.  Alignment

Nothing new.

8.  Testing

This is not starting today as planned.

9.  Site Report

Greg is not here at the meeting but he did talk to us earlier about the platform. It will be designed to take 20,000 pounds (DEIMOS can not exceed this amount).

10.  Web Report (Heather)

The pictures are up on the website and the meeting minutes are all updated as well.

11.  Shipping/Travel

Containers/racks: The racks will be here June 1 and the parking spots are being reserved. We also got trucking quotes in from Matson. The King Crane P0's are set up, and we are still waiting for quotes from Puna and the insurance companies.

Crates: Jerry is waiting to hear from the vendor for this.

Travel: There is an airfare issue; we need tickets for November and December as soon as possible. The lodging per diem is $150, not $89.

**The Navy cannot compete with commercial carriers.

12.  Schedule

Early July will be the pre-ship review.
