DEIMOS Team Meeting

6-1-2000

Attendees:     Dave Cowley, Vernon Wallace, Heather Mietz, Carol Harper, Jeff Lewis, Jack Osborne, Matt Radovan, Dave Hilyard, Chris Wright, Barry Alcott, Kirk Gilmore, Bob Kibrick, Ken Dietsch, Terry Mast, Greg Wirth (via telephone) and Sandy Faber

1.    Next Meeting:

·         June 22, 2000, 10:30 a.m.

2.    Detector/ Mosaic

Science Mosaic:

·         The CCDs were installed on the backplane on the 30th of May. There was one problem having to do with alignment and rotation when the screws were tightened. This needs to be explored further.  The goal is to achieve +- 25 microns.

·         The science mosaic needs to be completed by June 19th.

·         Chris needs to order spare cables.

·         Dave needs to order more clips from GL Scientific.

·         The FC measurements need to be reviewed to assist Matt with fiber placement.

3.    Dewar

·         Kirk is performing various tests on the zeolite, such as with the ion pump on and off to get RGA feedback. He will have comprehensive results at a later date.

Flexure Control Devices – Chris Wright

·         Chris is finishing wave forms today.

Engineering Mosaic– Chris Wright

·         Chris is making some dark current measurements.

·         The ion pump’s spikes in current are decreasing, which is good news. The roughing that was done to the ion pump seems to be helping a lot.  Kirk pointed out that there was no zeolite in the dewar as well.

·         We lost the 35 volt supply controller over the weekend. The resistor was exceeding wattage. The power monitor board does not monitor voltage after switches. Barry and Chris will look at and redesign the power monitor board in the summer/fall.

·         Warm up will occur Friday, June 3rd or early the following week.

·         Our plan is to explore the power up and temperature diode issues, then install the science array.

4.    Camera

·         The camera is still in its shipping box and is waiting to go into the spectrograph.

5.    Software (Bob)

·         Steve, De and Bob have nailed down the first issues for mosaic descrambling  software integration – it will be done this month.

·         Will is expecting to work on motion control software this Friday or Monday.

·         Bob’s big push is to get the FCS system and VME crate all tied up.

·         Grating Slide #3 will be released by Barry the week of June 12th.

6.    Electronics (Barry Alcott)

·         The fiber optic cable has not arrived yet.

·         AC power distribution is painted and waiting for installation.

·         The circuit breakers have been ordered.

·         The PXL rack mounting has been fabricated and is ready to be installed.

·         We received the replacement for the PXL camera, and Carol has got it to run.  All seems OK.  Bob needs to do a bit of work with the 16 bit software.

·         Piezo actuator and extension cables work on the bench tests and need to be installed onto the instrument.

·         The control panels are ready to be installed on the instrument, as well as the Lantronics box, so we can talk to the instrument directly.

·         Two handheld barcode readers were ordered.

·         Barry is writing up a plan for retrofit/redesign of the boards.

7.    Optics

·         The TV guide mirror is ready to be coated.

·         Vern is still working on the long slits design.

·         Ca Fluoride – the ingot is expected any day now.

8.    Collimator (Jack)

·         The dummy collimator is in the cell, and the center weight is stabilized.

·         Preliminary tests on 3-4 revolutions look good so far.

9.    Tent Mirror

·         The Piezo operated side B of the aluminized mirror. Per Dave C., the Piezo should be installed to ensure the cables are correct.

10.           Slit Mask System

·         The new form design is complete and is being drafted (1 big piece). The auxiliary parts are complete. The drawings will be in the Instrument shop at the end of next week.

·         Dick aligned the current cassettes to form but only checked rotation limitations.

11.           Grating System

·         #3 is assembled and ready for De to run.

·         The system is unbalanced and will be for 4-5 days. We are waiting for some limit switches and other items. #2 needs more stability.

·         The next test will involve clamping for better alignment.

·         Carol and Jack did final torque run tests in 4 position angles and want it 3x faster.  240 seconds is the baseline.

12.           TV System

·         All parts will be machined and an assembly mocked up next week (per Jeff).

13.           Calibration System

·         The Oriel order should arrive here on Friday, June 3rd or  Monday, June 6th. Matt needs to place orders for UVP lamps ASAP.

14.           FC Light System

·         There is a light ring coming off the back wall, and Matt is working on a drawing to modify the tube. Modifications will probably include a prism at the end of it.

·         The two assemblies now have two tube sizes.

·         Dave wants design sign-off by Wednesday, June 8th (after the test), and Dave and Terry Mast will be involved in this sign-off.

15.           Filter Wheel

·         There is some backlash, and the gear will be in next week (then it can be tuned). Inertia between the motor and the Filter Wheel could be the cause of the tuning problem. The goal is 50 counts, and currently it is at 400 counts.

16.           Structure

·         Jeff wants all holes and taps to be decided on before optics go in. Dave C and Vern will get these to Jeff next week.

·         Coolant hoses will go in today.

·         The holes in the drive disk are all tapped out so the skin can go on.

17.           Alignment

·         Terry Mast needs to plan the alignment process by the SSC meeting, July 12th.

·         Barry mentioned that the camera will have 8 temperature sensors on it, so keep this in mind.

18.           Site Report (Greg from Keck)

·         LRIS B takes up most of Greg Wirth’s time.

19.           Web

·         Tests from Jack were placed on web.

·         The raw data from Excel has not been put up on web due to time and site organizational issues.  Heather  will ask Bob if it is necessary to do this with all tests, as she will need to redesign the current system if this is the case.

20.           Q23

·         The draft of Q23 is almost ready.

21.           Schedule

·         June 19th the science mosaic will be in, and Optics will see first light mid-July.
