DEIMOS Team Meeting

4/6/00

Attendees:     Bob Kibrick, Jeff Lewis, Barry Alcott, Jack Osborne, David Hilyard, Vern Wallace, Heather Mietz, Chris Wright, Dave Cowley, Sandy Faber, Matt Radovan and Carol Harper.

1.      Next Meeting:

·         April 20, 2000, 10:30 a.m. PST (this is a new time!)

2.      Detector/Array

·         Sandy – we’re moving forward with the Science Array, working on stage height calibration map, and getting the measurements of the contamination in the Dewar.

·         Chris Wright – we have tested 6 out of 8 CCD’s.  # 8 was a dead device to begin with, and # 7 is acting like it won’t cool down.  The CTE test was performed on 4-5-00. We can’t do the parallel measurements but can do the serial measurements.  The 2nd arm doesn’t want to move with the magnet on the lower arm – Terry needs to look at this.

·         Kirk is going to assemble the science CCD on moly blocks this weekend and work on the science array assembly next week.

3.      Dewar

·         We are not yet controlling the temperature server. Friday the 14th of April is our warm up goal.

·         The FC devices should be up and running April 17th – 21st .

·         Next cool down April 21st or 24th.

Dewar Window

·         80% done now and should be finished today, April 6th. Sandy, Dave and Richard will have a meeting regarding our turbo pump needs.

·         The ion pump can be turned off for 20 minutes and still receive data.

4.      Camera/Testing

·         Vern –  We took camera images and measured back focal distances on axis and at 10 degrees off axis. The off axis measurements were at 4 azimuths of 90 degree increments. The back focal distances were consistent from on axis to off axis. However, the initial back focal distance measurements were incorrect due to chromatic aberration in collimator. Back focal distance measured on axis using the Zygo to provide the input collimated beam source is 6.535 mm = 0.2578”. This agrees with the predicted value.

·         Carol has completed the camera as-built drawing revisions

5.      Software (Bob Kibrick)

·         De, Steve and Drew are working on the Slit Mask.

·         Dean is working on barcode software – Chris Wright needs to order more barcode readers.

·         Three prospects have interviewed for the Mt. Hamilton position. An offer will be made, and there is a suitable back up candidate.

·         Some security questions have arisen for CARA.

6.      Electronics

·         Carol Harper is back in the Electronics Shop to assist with DEIMOS.

·         Ted worked on the ion pump actuator: it is wired, has been tested, and is working.

·         Ken and Vern have been working on the slit mask.

·         Schematics update is completed.

·         Rotation interlock system completed.

·         Barry wants to make up some CCD mock ups.

·         Electronics Integration should be done by the end of April.

·         We have 2 UPS’s here but will likely need at least one more for second beam. Space is a problem.  A meeting after this one is needed on this issue.

·         A shutter reminder was posed that once it’s installed into Deimos, it cannot be removed without also removing the dewar and filter wheel.

7.      Optics

·         The Calcium Fluoride blank for Element 5 is being manufactured to be complete in  6 – 12 weeks.

8.      Structure

·         Counterweight made but not yet installed.

·         Matt Thompson to start working beginning of May.

·         Lynn Parcel has also been hired in the Instrument Lab.

9.      Collimator

·         No Report.

10. Tent Mirror

·         Dave Cowley will get a date from Bill Brown as to when the tent mirror can be aluminized. It will be aluminized all the way to the edges. April 14th is the earliest possible date. Jack and Sandy to have a meeting regarding this later.

11.  Slit Mask (Vern)

·         Have operated slit selection with Galil motor at four Deimos rotation angles, in 90 degree increments.

·         The flexure problems in the cassette actuator have been solved. The problems noted:

1)     the insertion “ hot dog “ comes out of the slit mask when pushing the slit mask down.

2)     motor torque requirements are quite high - one of the limit switch bars hits the new mount before end of travel.

Slit Mask Fibers

·         Per Matt, the bulbs get hot.  There is a 14mm field stop 8” below the test fixture (Matt will make this).

12. Grating System

·         Torque on the motor crashed on the vertical.  The limit switch was rebuilt. There is 90 seconds between adjacent positions – per Sandy, Jack should try to get it 2.5 x faster. 1 ½  to 2 amps to move grating position between positions.

·         Sliders 3 & 4 have been assembled, the anodizing is being done, and the cells are being manufactured. The alignment jig will be finished in one or two days.

13.  TV System

·         Jack is going to get the drawings together and look them over. Ken and Carol to learn how to run the photometrics system.

14.  Calibration System

·         Drew Phillips is analyzing calibration images from LRIS.

·         Matt to give Sandy the list of lamps.  Per Dave C., Matt to do 8 fibers so we have 4 spares.

15.  FC Light System

·         No Report

16. Filter Wheel

·         Have designed required revisions. Carol is drafting.

17. Alignment

·         No report.

18. Site Report

·         No report.

19. Web Site

·         Heather – Added more material mostly test results. All quarterly reports are on the site now. Implementing design breakdown system that was set up by Sandy.

20. Schedule

·         June is still scheduled for first light
