DEIMOS Team Meeting

3/23/00

Attendees:     Bob Kibrick, Jeff Lewis, Kirk Gilmore, Barry Alcott, Jack Osborne, David Hilyard, Vern Wallace, Heather Mietz, Chris Wright, Ken Dietsch, Dave Cowley, Greg Wirth and Sandy Faber.

1.      Next Meeting:

·         April 6, 2000  9:30 a.m.

2.      Detector

·         Kirk has the RTV results – refer to the handout. He wasn’t able to test the GE560. The DOW 1104 seems to yield the best results, and he will be testing more materials next week.

·         Dave C. – we are making another Dewar faceplate, and will be testing it to make sure it works mechanically. Vern will take this over while Dave is gone @ the SPIE conference. We will know by next week whether we can pull a vacuum. RTV is our first choice, O-rings are the back up.

·         Dave Hilyard will be making the 2nd window.

·         We need vented screws for the moly blocks.

·         We need to get clips from Gerry Luppino, then Jeff can re-tap them (best use of time and money this way).

·         Sandy will be measuring assembly & putting together the science array with Kirk. We have some extra time, since we need to warm engineering array with the FC next week.

·         April 3rd – do “Dressed” test.

·         There were errors in our CCD measurements which were systematic front to back – of order of 20 – 30 microns. These need to be discussed in more detail after this meeting.  We also need to talk to Jeff about measuring the moly blocks.

3.      Dewar

·         Temperature measurements were made from all diodes; they read from 109 to 112. Bob was going to apply heat Tues, but the flood in Nat Sci 2 prohibited this.

·         Sandy wants a plot of temperature and fill times over time when we warm up next time. Kirk will do this.

·         On Mauna Kea we may need to warm chips as much as 35°, which is more heater power than have done previous. We need to aim for mid-heater power. Bob will work on it (when time allows), and then we can test.

·         Chris sees a possible light leak coming from ion pump. He is monitoring this, and it is not urgent yet.

·         1 CCD is completely saturated, and it was a good CCD. Bob is concerned something happened to it but doesn’t know why.  When warm, he’ll take the chip out and perform tests in other dewars. He can also swap that chip’s position with another chip.

·         Terry Pfister is doing shutter and lens now and will be done next week.

4.      Camera

·         Vern put the camera on the test stand. Image size is  4.4 rms. with a 15 micron pinhole (this fits in one pixel). A new setup for microscope was built, and working on the on-axis images this afternoon.

5.      Software (Bob Kibrick)

·         Steve and Bob are still integrating descrambling software.

·         Drew is working on slit mask designs, but no updates are available.

·         The software group is still on track for being entirely on Deimos in April.

6.      Electronics

·         Wire was added to the Galil controller so it would interact with ion pump controller – will be ready for testing today or Monday 27th for remote control of ion pump current.

·         We now have 90°  backshells for connectors.

·         Chris and Barry are worried about cable length and plan test with a foam dummy to measure cable lengths.

·         Finished most schematics, and have been made into web pages.

·         AC power distribution in carriage and barrel is no problem unless we need more UPS’s. Barry thinks we’ll need one more for 2nd beam.

·         Finishing Galil safety modifications – done 4 out of 5. Spare amplifier in Hawaii, swapping that one with the official ESI spare now.

·         Ken attended a Galil class on 3/20 and says it was helpful.

7.      Optics

·         Dave Hilyard - covered in Camera section.

·         Dave C.  ordered the Calcium Fluoride, and we should receive it in 3 months

8.      Structure

·         The counterweight is done, but we need to test fit it.

·         The slit mask machinery back on and is balanced.

9.      Collimator

·         Nothing new

10. Tent Mirror

·         Jack need to design fixtures.

·         Testing – there is still pulling.  It will be placed in the environmental chamber at 0° c.

11.  Slit Mask

·         Installed and can be tested when Ken is available. Test should be at different rotation angles. We also need a flexure test on cassette.

·         Fibers – Matt back next week to report

12. Grating System

·         Jack and instrument shop are building sliders 3 and 4, and are 90% done.

·         Lots of friction in slide – Jack will have this issue understood next week.

·         Alignment jig – Dick still working on it.

13.  TV System

·         Jack is assembling the drawings, but has not looked them over yet.

14.  Calibration System

·         Matt is back next week.

·         Greg Wirth has calibration spectra from LRIS.

15.  FC Light System

·         Matt is back next week.

16. Filter Wheel

·         In shop – some minor changes needed, and will be complete mid-late next week.

17. Alignment

·         No report.

18. Site Report

·         No report from Keck.

·         Dave C. – will start putting together commissioning plan.  He notes that Fred Chaffee was concerned with the number of people needed at Keck.

·         Sandy submitted a proposal to design side B (since it’s empty) and asked SSC for design money. Cal Tech hired Professor Ellis who wants to do it. The majority of the design work will probably be at Cal Tech, but we might do optics and other parts.

19. Web Site

·         Heather is implementing parts of new design proposal as needed.

·         Excel Documents – Ken and Barry are working on solving the download/open problem with Netscape and Excel

20. Schedule

·         First light is currently 4 weeks behind, which puts pre-ship review in early December. This is important because if it does not hit this time frame, it won’t happen until mid-January.
