DEIMOS Team Meeting

2/10/00

Attendees:     Dave Cowley, Vern Wallace, Jack Osborne, Sandy Faber, Terry Mast, Barry Alcott, Chris Wright, Ken Dietsch, Heather Mietz, Jeff Lewis, David Hilyard, Matt Radovan, Bob Kibrick

1.      Next Meeting:

·         February 23, 9:30 am (**Wednesday)

2.      Detector

·         Richard Stover and Sandy need 8 CCDs on the detector – we have 4 now and will need 4 from Lots 9 and 10. Sandy is concerned because she hasn’t received call backs from the collaborators, and getting the science array ready is a most pressing issue.

·         Mosaic: This needs a side meeting right after this meeting.

3.      Dewar

·         Dewar has been cooled down – between –106.4°F and –102°F – so this is good news.  Terry did see a small rainbow pattern, but we are not drawing conclusions yet. Everything is on a test cart right now.

·         Vacuum can not sweating, also good news.

·         Sandy talked to Kirk - the ion pump was on all night without the roughing pump, and the pressure remained stable.

·         Today, at lunch, Sandy, Dave and others to look at dewar and Terry Pfister’s ESI lab notebook to figure out what the differences are between this and ESI’s boards.

4.      Camera

·         Vern:

§            RTV’d element #9 into its cell.

§             Dewar window will be RTV’d in today.

§            Bubbles are out of element #3.

§            Need to put fluid in last doublet.

§            Assembly of bodies 4 and 5 will happen the week of Feb 22.

·         Camera Testing: The camera mounting will be used for testing, and rollers need to be designed to roll it. Testing begins week of Match 6-10. The spacer between elements 2 and 3 are already flocked, and if these go into the freezer, place in bag and put nitrogen or argon in as well.

5.      Software (Bob Kibrick)

·         Deimos keyword list has been examined and will be circulated to those who are interested.

·         Steve – Still out on leave and expected back Feb 14 or 15. He will then continue to look at the mosaic descrambling.

·         Bob – finished upgrading the CCD lab’s readout software.  Still needs to look at CCD lab’s controller.

·         Dean – still working on exposure meter.

·         Shutter systems – ESI still having issues, opening blade occasionally tardy. Ted is working on changes to the shutter control box for Deimos to give us more control, such as ability to toggle remotely between 1 and 2 blade mode.

6.      Electronics

·         Dewar temperature testing – Ken working on getting the graphic display for the data logger.

·         Slide stage – we are driving the slide stage for the first time through the computer and manually, horizontally and vertically. Note – per Jack, during manual mode the computer can still run it, so those working on it need to be aware of the potential hazard here. A newer version of the ESI software might be all that’s needed – Bob to help look into finding this.

·         Chris:

§            Spent most of the week hunting down the pre-amplifier oscillation issue.  The instability seems to be caused by the length of the shielded video lines from the CCD output to the preamplifier  He is currently testing what seems to be the best method to compensate for this.

§             After running the near-dead, we found slower rise time in the clock line- this needs to be fixed and put back.

§            Controller can’t be swapped with Kirk’s until Feb 14th or 15th because of the oscillation issue.

7.      Optics (also see Item #4, Camera)

·         It's been 5 months Body #1 with fluid and no signs of leaking.

·         Body #3 has been filled for 2 weeks.  The bubbles which first appeared are now gone, and there is no leaking.

·         Bath tub ring – Dave H. had to work the fluid to get the bubbles out, so this eliminated some of these spots, but not all.

·         Optovac orders are still outstanding.  They can produce in 3-4 months, but so much time has passed that we have probably lost our price protection and should cancel.  Dave will cancel, and $33,000 will be added back to the books.

·         ORA – order in progress.

Action Items/to be discussed further

q     Meeting to discuss thermal camera tests with Sandy, Terry M., and Dave: Feb 11 at 2 pm.

8.      Structure

·         Camera mount is in, and it’s been fit-tested (result=it fits).

·         Collimator: need to think about getting the mirror into the cell.

9.      Tent Mirror

·         Aluminized early March and Bill will put in red chamber at Mt. Hamilton. Testing not done yet, will strength test once the best way is determined. Once testing is started, we can put the hardware together.

10.  Slit Mask

·         Cassette Drive – we will balance first with weight, then put cassette on.

·          Fibers: Matt says we can run copper argon lamps, so set the tests to make quick fiber and make sure bright enough.  Matt is still gathering safety information from Andy on these lamps.  Sandy would like to see these lamps – possible Feb 16th at 9am.

·         The slit mask material we received from Alumat is highly reflective and machines well.  We have 100 lbs.  Sandy wants to discuss possibilities of making once side not shiny – possible issue with flaking, extra time to manufacture.  Needs to be discussed further.

Action Items/to be discussed further

q     Matt and Sandy to look at lamps Feb 16th at 9 am.

q     Discuss slit mask material “shine” issue.

11. Grating System

·         Alignment jig – Jeff says it’s 90% done.

·         Slider #2 is complete and installed.

·         Sliders 3 and 4 in progress.

·         Testing has started – for clearance (there is no ramp up – goes straight from 40,000 to 100,000 – Ken hasn’t found the upper limit yet). Ran horizontally and vertically.  Clamping was not tried, and alignment is next.

12.  TV System

·         Matt to get shutter, since DEIMOS will use one.

Action Items/to be discussed further

q     Meeting to discuss this with Sandy and Matt.

13.  Calibration System

·         Matt is still gathering information needed from Greg Wirth on HIRES – will try again tomorrow.

14.  FC Light System

·         Copper Argon will be used (see “Slit Mask” above). We will have 2 lamps, but only 1 lamp will be running. The other will serve as an emergency lamp.

15. Filter Wheel

·         All parts are in and assembly tests are next. After this, will go to Electronics Shop.

16. Alignment

·         Nothing new.

17. Shipping

·         Matson said they could handle the shipping of Deimos for around $4500 (rough estimate, doesn’t include forklift operators).  Other freight forwarders have said no.  Just starting the research on this.

18. Site Report

·         Didn’t call in, so no report.

19. Web Site

·         Heather mapped out the ESI website and made a tree to represent this.  Next step will be to get together with those interested and use the ESI site as a jumping off point to what information we want up there, historically and present.  Need to map out an index, prioritize tasks, and then assign people to code (Ken, Heather) and people to supply data (engineers, etc.).

Action Items/to be discussed further

q     Heather to set up and facilitate meeting Feb 22 or 23 with De, Barry, Ken, Terry M., Sandy, Drew, and Dave. (meeting is scheduled Feb 23 at 2 PM in engineering)

20. Q 22

·         Dave got some material from people and wrote the rest.  He is waiting for Marlene’s numbers, especially the budget through the end of the year.  The campus changed its reporting system drastically, so this has been holding us up.

21. SSC Meeting

·         March 14th, here in engineering.

22. Schedule

·         The dewar is setting the pace for us right now.  As we move closer to the testing phase we need to put together a test schedule.
