DEIMOS Team Meeting

12/15/00

Attendees: Dave Cowley, Heather Mietz, Sandy Faber, Vern Wallace, Will Deich, Drew Phillips, Jack Osborne, Kirk Gilmore, Dave Hilyard, Ken Dietsch, Chris Wright

1.    Next Meeting:

·         January 11, 2001 at 9:30 a.m.

·         Software meeting on same day at 2 p.m.

·         Sandy will not be here on January 25, so the following meeting will be on January 24 at 9 a.m. (one-time basis).

·         Schedule for holidays:  No one working here except Sandy/Drew, who will come in 1 day for tests. 1 person will come in to fill the dewar.

2.    CCDs, Mosaic, Controllers, etc.

·         CCDs:  Before Sandy left for Chile, she sent Gerry Lupino an email saying we need two Lot 14 devices.  Sandy will contact him again, possibly before the holidays.

·         Mosaic:  We have new backplane, but it still needs a few holes.  A meeting is needed to discuss the holes it needs.  We’ll cover other backplane issues after we get back from the campus closure.  Scheduled meeting: Wednesday, 9 a.m. with Sandy and Kirk.

·         There was some discussion about whether the silver “braid” was needed.  It was decided that we did not need this braid.

·         The moly blocks and clips need to be located.  Ask Terry Pfister for them, because we did receive them from Gerry Lupino. Terry was the last one who had them.

·         Controllers:  Chris got the Leach boards completed and tested, and he sent 2 more boards to be fixed.  Bob will send 5 boards soon (4 new, 1 fixed), and he’s still working on the 6th board. The plan is still to go to 16 amps in January.  Chris is researching the cables in the background.  He will continue this in January.

3.    Software (Will for Bob)

·         Bob is working on a 100 megabit crate, but he is out of the office until January.

·         Dean says the lamps are done and the ion pumps are being tested now.  There needs to be software control for grating tilt.  Sandy talked with Dean about this and it should be taken care of within a few weeks.

·         De will work on GUI and ion pumps as soon as Dean is done.

·         Will spent lots of time on temperature sensors.  The rotation keywords are done and will undergo testing next week.  Steve is still working on Lick Serve and the mask and fabrication throughout January.  DS9 is still up in the air, but this situation needs to wait until developers decide on standard.

·         By next Wednesday, make sure the software works and has the loose ends tied up for work that Sandy and Drew will do over the holidays.

4.    Electronics (Ken for Barry)

·         Barry is working on the fiber optics for the CCD controller.

·         Ted is wiring and testing calibration lamps and has completed wiring and testing the ion pump.  He is also working on AC wiring for SCSI small computer systems and some cradle wiring.

·         Carol went to a Galil class for a  few days, and she tested grating tilt #4.

·         Ken worked with Terry on the focus system.  They rewired the logic because the motor was flipped.  He updated the website and drawings and worked on the slit mask with Vern.

·         Carol and Ken will rewire fiducials on the slit mask. The slit mask will be mounted but not connected.

5.    Optics

·         Nothing new.

6.    Mechanical:

Slit Mask:

·         In the testing phase.

Calibration System:

·         Emission line lamps are done. The quartz lamp has issues with red emission and problems with the fibers in the red being absorbed by the reflector.  Matt needs to come up with a plan for fixing this.  This could possibly be caused by length and curvature problems or materials. **Note: Sandy is very pleased with the calibration lamp system.

FC Light System:

·         By the end of the year, Matt will have the remaining 3 fibers completed.

Cladding:

·         We received some additional parts, but this will be a background task.

Glycol cooling:

·         Another background task; parts are ordered.

Grating System (Jack):

·         Jack built a lot of hardware, and the aligning process has begun.  Slider #2 is in with hard pads and shims.  The next step would be to check clamping at different angles.  Stiffeners and pins were added to main beam.

·         Per Dave, the goal is to finish the grating mechanisms by mid-January, but we might not make this.  Getting Slider #2 working will be a big step, so we need to focus on this by spending time doing functional testing in all angles.  To be discussed offline.

Flexure:  Nothing new.

7.    Alignment

·         Nothing new.

8.    Testing

·         Nothing new.

9.    Site Report per Dave (no Keck call-in)

·         Hilton wants to know about people needed in Hawaii.  Jim Bell is not available until January.

·         NIRC 2 needs parts and is slipping its schedule. If NIRC 2 slips, DEIMOS might be pushed forward.  Sandy suggests we talk to Keck about this schedule and what can be shifted around.  Pre-ship in April would require special circumstances if shifting was to occur.

10.           Web (Heather)

·         Heather is cleaning up the DEIMOS home page and redoing format and structure, plus fixing some bad images.  Heather wants this to be all cleaned up by Pre-ship.

11.           Shipping/Travel

·          We will meet with Matson in January (in person).

12.           Schedule

·         Slit mask and grating systems are the top priority at this time. Second priority is to meet the October date of commissioning. Pre-ship review will be in June.
