DEIMOS Team Meeting 11/18/99 Attendees: Dave Cowley, David Hilyard, Vern Wallace, Jack Osborne, Trent Freeman, Sandy Faber, Terry Mast, Barry Alcott, Chris Wright, Ken Dietsch, Bob Kibrick 1. Next Meetings: * November 30, 9:30 am (Tuesday) * Next SSC meeting - 10/4 at Caltech. DEIMOS will not be fully presented, but will need updating. 2. Agenda Nothing to add 3. Schedule Nothing to add 4. Testing * Ken is assisting Jim with testing. * Test strategy is testing in parts before integration to face issues up front. 5. Detector * Kirk was working on flexure control design, but no update from Richard (not at Team Meeting). 6. Dewar Thermal Test: * Got the dewar cooled down to between -110??and -113? with a hold time of 22 hours. This is very good news. * Temperature variation range of 1.9?. It was stable until it burned off all the liquid nitrogen, then there was a quick variance. * Dave's goal is to get it to a 24 hour hold time. Action Items/to be discussed further * Terry/Dave C. to write up a quick synopsis of the tests and the results. Flexure * Measured flexure of backplane with changing gravity - saw a .004 peak to peak at 180? and half of this was due to the delrin. Backplane weighs 5 pounds. Per Dave C., we need to redesign to get this down to a number of microns. Gary is making a prototype to be complete on 11/19. * Stageplate moves 1.5 thousandths peak to peak at 180?. We wanted 4 times less than that. * Stages - Ken and Jim set the torque to 2, and this is the probable minimum. Ken believes we can go higher. The stages are being run at this point. Have not done the backlash and repeatability tests yet but will. Mosaic Building: * Terry has task list and schedule - this should happen in mid-December, but a dewar delay could push this out. If the dewar falls behind, Terry will find other things for the people involved to do. * Carts - material is in, and the Instrument shop will build these next week. Action Items/to be discussed further * Linear probe needed - Terry is looking into this. We have one in the Instrument shop, but it may not be usable (based on recent trial uses). 7. Camera Vern: * Body 3 assembly is nearly complete - RTV Element 4 is complete, and only have minor things to do. Will be complete 11/19, and at this time we will be able to fill with fluid. * Screws aren't going through the holes - we will try to take some plating off the screws to make them fit. * Vern currently has no plans for thermal testing the camera as a whole. Per Sandy, this should be thought about and discussed at a later date. * Assembly of Body 4 and 5 * Assembly documentation - Carol found neither have Asphere showing, so a spacer to fit before Element 8 has been designed. * Procedure is worked out, but Dave H. and Vern have not discussed it yet. * Danco is currently working on Body 4. They measured the ID and came up with 2 numbers that were a tenth of a millimeter apart. * The last operation on Body 4 is not complete. The edge of 7 needs to be ground down to the right thickness. Discuss with Terry M. further. Misc: * Group #1 is filled with oil but can't rotate until Vern has the bladder covers. This is not on the schedule, so Dave C. will talk to Jeff about them. * Optical testing - Zemax has been run to determine what we will test and the error budget. It's estimated the optical testing will be performed in the first week of February. * Goal - By the holiday break the dummy weights will be in as well as the flexures; RTV optical element into Body 4 after the holidays, so the assembly will be done in January. Action Items/to be discussed further * Sandy and Terry M. to discuss this goal further. 8. Software (Bob Kibrick) * This week work on ESI "freezes". * De has started looking at image displays. * Steve - working on NOAO * Dean - tied up this month with exposure meter * Bob was at jury duty, but he and Chris have been revising the science controller software. * CCD CCR documentation - Scott S. is reviewing to become more familiar with project. * The first DEIMOS software meeting is this afternoon, 11/18. 9. Electronics Barry: * UPS research - Barry only found 1 UPS which looks like it will fit, and even then the insulation will have to be shaved down.. Hold time is 8 minutes at full load, 24 minutes at half load. * Ken and Jim working on dewar stages. * Program has been written for HP data logger which will place data in Excel worksheet and create file all at once. * Dewar cable - there are issues. Kirk and Chris have reported problems with shorts and open circuits. The Electronics shop has been unable to duplicate those issues and can't track them down. The problems are also intermittent. The failure rate is 25%. Barry does believe it's the execution of the design which is the issue (in the building of them), such as the wires melting in the soldering process. ACTION: If can't find the short, will rebuild cable and start over. Chris: * Printed circuit boards are in, and the cable assemblies were delayed but should be in today. * Some issues with video boards - need to modify 2 older ones to use. * Flexure compensation cables should be in before the holidays, otherwise will be second week of January. This won't be a problem, but 2 CCD systems should probably be made. If they go ahead and build with the flexure control device then the only thing that wouldn't be in is the connectors between the dewar and the device. Chris will test in CCD lab and then clean. Misc: * Video boards - per Bob, dual amplification mode means we need 4 more boards. Order for these should be placed. * Barry found the cables were stiff at temperature, so a spool of cable was ordered accordingly. This has possible ramifications in cable take-up, cost is $200, so Sandy/Dave OK'd reordering it now. * VME crates - backplane flexing when put boards in. Stiffener was installed and seems to work. The new chassis does not have this issue - for future projects. * Bob - There was a failure of axis in Galil controller on ESI, so it was swapped out and Andy will bring it back for inspection (as DEIMOS' is the same). **There is no current checklist of cables to assist in expedient swapping of devices, so one needs to be created. Action Items/to be discussed further * Does testing of the near dead mosaics make sense in terms of the FC systems? * Sandy - proposal for adding cables needed. * Barry to create simple checklist of cables. 10. Structure * Access hatch - complete, and passed the dewar model through as a test. All ok. * Rotation - Instrument shop should be rotating tomorrow, 11/19. * The cable wrap has been painted and will be picked up 11/19 or 11/22. * Building mount drive disk now, need jigging for back end of camera. 11. Slit Mask System * Nothing new. 12. Grating System * Will be starting on soon. 13. Tent Mirror * Nothing new. 14. TV System * Have design and drawings. 15. Calibration System * Nothing new. 16. Filter Wheel * Due from Quality Precision on 12/22. This might slide to early January based on the holiday break. 17. FC system * Nothing new. 18. Alignment * Nothing new. *Trent's last day with Lick Observatory will be 12/10.
