DEIMOS Team Meeting 10/19/99 Attendees: Dave Cowley, David Hilyard, Vern Wallace, Jack Osborne, Trent Freeman, Sandy Faber, Drew Phillips, Steve Allen, Terry Mast 1. Next Meetings: * November 4, 9:30 am (Thursday) * November 18, 9:30 am (Thursday) 2. Agenda Nothing to add 3. Schedule * Dave gave revised schedule to SSC on 10/11. There is about a 3-month slip he is trying to regain. * Goals: * Instrument together by end of March 2000 (except the dewar) so all can be tested by that time. * Dewar complete in June of 2000 * Pre-ship review November 2000 * Ship in January 2001 Action Items/to be discussed further * Dave to give Instrument shop a prioritized list of what needs to be done. 4. Testing * Dewar - thermal testing this Thursday before taking it apart. * All dewar systems have been tested individually, and more detail is on web pages. 5. Detector - Richard Nothing changed since last meeting, and Richard not in attendance. 6. Dewar * Mosaic: * Discussed putting together the mosaic as a test - there are 4 dead detectors on the backplane and rest could be filled in with empty packages. * A special tool was going to be designed to fasten the connectors, but Trent hasn't designed it yet. Trent thinks it can be done by hand. * There are two plates on each side. * The diodes and resistors are all mounted and cured (and ready to go). * Dave thinks dewar is on track for this Thursday's test. * Backplane: There are 2 total. The one for this test is mostly flat. The second one will be made very flat. * Dick is adding holes to the backplate. * Two mechanisms are in the dewar (Jim B. wired them), switches are in and the variables set. * Thermal/Structural Support: * Flexure measure needs to be a part of this per Sandy. * Trent is a third of the way through the list of things to do related to the dewar. * Signal chain qualification - Chris W. to test this instead of Bob, but Bob is supposed to program it such that Chris can test on 10/22. * Cover plate design is at the top of Trent's list. The jigging for the microscope is next. * Testing: Goals of the testing are twofold - 1) How cold can we get it and 2) get a reading on the hold time. ESI had an 18 hour hold time. We are expecting 22-24 hours. It needs to be over 16 hours. 7. Camera * Vern: * Element 6 has been RTV'd into body 3 and is cured and ready to continue assembly. * Vern is working on drawings for bodies 4 and 5. Body 4 had to be contracted out to Danco, as shop does not have adequate time to make. Vern will talk to Rod (at Danco) when drawings are delivered to go over lessons learned from previous jobs. * A preliminary procedure for the doublet assembly has been drafted. Dave will schedule (with the Instrument shop) a test which involves getting bodies 4 and 5 in, using metal in place of glass for weight, and assembling with flexures to test before installing glass. * Dave Hilyard: Fluid has been in body 1 for 33 days with no leakage. * Per Sandy, Mike Rogers has left ORA (our opticians). He volunteered to help us as needed and left our files in DP Rogers' hands. It is Sandy's highest priority to conclude our business with them at this point. * The holes on the Freeman and sheer rings match the dewar. * We have not started on the thermal actuator as this is not our highest priority. Vern is modifying pieces. 8. Software (Steve Allen) * Image display: We have code from CAF and NOAO, but since they were not talking to each other during the process of creating this code, it seems we might have to put it together ourselves. Sandy suggests she, Steve and Drew go out to NOAO in November. 9. Electronics * Chris is working on detector chain. * The spare motor control was shipped to Keck as a spare. It will be back here in a few weeks unless we need it sooner. 10. Structure (Rotation and Nose Structure) * The parts needed for balancing are back from being plated, and Dick will reassemble as time permits. Jack found a new method of plating - zinc with black finish - should use this in future as needed. * The access hatch is next in priority after rotation. Dick doesn't have drawings for hatch modifications, but needs them. * The cable wrap also needs to rotate. 11. Slit Mask System * This is installed, but can't test until rotated. There is a 2.1" discrepancy, all else is clear. 12. Grating System * Danco is done - we should see parts today. 13. Tent Mirror * Weighs 35 pounds; Dave H. checked the dimensions and they meet the drawing specs. 14. TV System - placeholder 15. Calibration System - placeholder 16. Filter Wheel * Vern got the quotes back - 2 are around $16,000 and one is for $10,500 from Quality Precision. Vern will write up the Order Memo today as long as the work they did on the rings is acceptable. 17. FC system - placeholder 18. Alignment - Terry M. to detail tests on rotation control and have a meeting with Barry, Jack, Sandy, Vern, Dave C., and Bob K. on 10/28 at 9am.
